Lake Johnson Nature Park
Open since 1952, this park has over 300 acres to explore. There are beautiful trails that wind around the park so you can get in your exercise or catch up with friends. You may also see people on the lake in their kayaks. Many people love to bring their leashed dogs to explore the park. Visit at sunrise or sunset to get some scenic photographs in. Lake Crabtree County Park
This 215-acre park has a 520-acre lake to go with it, along with many recreational opportunities. It’s known for having the best mountain biking trails in the area. There’s also a fishing pier and boat lunch that is open year-round. If you don’t have your own water sports equipment, rentals are available there. Children will love the large play area that is good for picnics as well. The park goes into William B. Umstead State Park and Cary’s Black Creek Greenway if you feel like exploring more. It’s a great place to take pictures of people and nature.
Fred G. Bond Metro Park and Boathouse
Fred G. Bond Metro Park is one of the largest parks in the Raleigh area. It has athletic fields, a playground, picnic shelters, a 300-seat amphitheater, hiking trails, and a challenge course that groups of eight or more can reserve. There are also hiking trails that loop around the lake for 2 miles, and even a smaller trail where dogs can walk without being on their leashes.
If you feel like doing water activities, you can rent out rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sunfish sailboats, and pedal boats. The boat launch lets any private boats that are less than 16 feet and nongas-powered to be launched. There are plenty of umbrellas and tables if you want to have a picnic as well. You’ll love taking pictures of all the activities going on here, from the boats to the hikers.
This was the first public park in North Carolina when it was established in 1887. It’s a great place to get away from the city and relax, as it’s between North Carolina State University’s main campus and downtown Raleigh. There are many activities for children to do here, including riding the carousel from 1911, hopping on the miniature train that goes through the park, and renting a pedal boat to go around Lake Howell. There are also softball and baseball fields and tennis courts.
